9 best winter activities to do with your kids

I find winter is so much more difficult to find activities everyone will enjoy while spending some time outdoors. We are outdoor lovers and we spend almost all of our time outside. But winter is a little harder. We do practice some winter sports but it just isn’t as easy as our summer season.

Summer is so much easier just because we are always camping. The camper trailer is basically used to sleep or on rainy days. Other than that, we are sitting outside or doing some sort of activity with the kids. We are almost never staying put. Whether we go for a walk, a swim, a hike, biking, paddleboarding, out for ice cream! You name it!

Even as adults, it’s harder to keep motivated while being indoors all the time, my kids seem to be turning in a circle all winter inside the house! So here are my 9 best winter activities to do with kids.

Go sledding

There are so many different places to go sledding nowadays. Whether it’s a hill close to your house, a winter park where you can go down the mountain on inflated tubes, or even a good old-fashioned wood sled, everyone is sure to have a great time while enjoying the outdoor air. Maybe even have some funny stories to tell! During the Holidays, we went to do some Austrian sledding. It was so much fun, we are planning to go again when there is a little more snow!

Have a snowball fight

Did you just get snowed in? Maybe, maybe not! But why not get everyone dressed up and have a huge snowball fight! Plenty of fun guaranteed! And the kids will appreciate these moments with you as well. Super simple but you will have so many laughs!

Build a snow fort or an igloo

You could also build a huge snow fort or an igloo with the kids. They will love their new fortress and they can even use it for their next snowball fight!

Have a winter picnic

One thing we love to do in the summertime is pack a lunch in our bags and head out for a walk or a bike ride. Why not do it in the wintertime too? Pack a cold lunch in a backpack and do any type of activity your family likes. Find a great spot and camp for an hour or so and enjoy your lunch!

Go skiing or snowboarding

We used to head out to the mountains every single weekend before we had kids. Since they are still young, it is harder to do but we do appreciate going once in a while. Our oldest son had some lessons so he is pretty good now. Our daughter is only two so she hasn’t had the chance to get lessons yet. We did bring her along with us once this year. She loved it! But she will definitely need a couple of lessons before everyone is confident on their snowboard. It is a fun activity to do. Family time while doing a winter sport!

Snowboard

Go snowmobiling

This year, we decided to buy a snowmobile. We’ve been having so much fun! We basically go snowmobiling every weekend! We leave for a couple of hours at a time. The kids love it! We are lucky enough to have trails near our house. It’s a fun activity everyone can enjoy and you get to see beautiful views along the way.

Rent a cabin

Renting a cabin will get you out of your everyday routine. Whether you want to rent a cabin just to change the scenery or practice some sports, there are plenty out there that will cover your needs. If you are feeling like reading a book by the fire with a view of the mountains for the weekend, that’s fine! Everyone can enjoy a change! You can also rent a cabin close to a mountain where you could go skiing or snowboarding, skating, hiking, snowshoeing… There are so many activities out there to keep everyone entertained! Make a winter scavenger hunt

You could also prepare a scavenger hunt for the kids. Prepare them a sheet with what they have to find. They will have a lot of fun wandering around trying to find all the items on their lists!

Go ice skating

This is an activity everyone usually likes! If the kids are too young to be skating by themselves, they can use the chair trick or you could even push the stroller on the ice! We have a nice skating trail close to home and instead of chairs, they have these cute seals kids can hold on to for balance. If they are tired, you can push the seal and they can sit down on it! How cool is that?

Whether you like winter or not, I hope these winter activities to do with your kids will help you try and get a little more outdoors and get the kids moving! A little bit of vitamin D for everyone is always a great thing!
